Capture and Report Carbon Emission in SAP Transportation Management in S/4HANA

In today's day and age, it is not a luxury but responsibility of organizations to both capture as well as report the carbon emissions in company's supply chain to ensure that they remain compliant to government carbon regulations as well as able to reduce carbon footprint to help the plant.

SAP Transportation Management in S/4HANA provides mechanism in form of embedded analytics to not only plan the calculation of carbon emission capture but also enable the customers to report the actual carbon emissions in their transportation landscape further enabling them report the emissions, do comparative analysis and make strategic decisions to reduce their carbon footprint.

Capture and Report Carbon Emissions using embedded/decentral TM on S/4HANA

We have configured and setup a case where the transportation planning is done by a customer using SAP TM on S/4HANA and Co2 emissions are using during planning of freight, calculated by SAP TM system, actual values of carbon emissions is captured using SAP TM Fiori Application and reporting using embedded analytics as part of out of box SAP TM offering in S/4HANA. The process runs in various steps which are explained below:

• Sales Order is created for the customer: First step in this scenario requires us to simulate a real world case where a standard sales order is created for the customer as shown below:
  

• Outbound Delivery & Freight Units created for the customer: An outbound delivery is created against the sales order to fulfil the requirements of the customer in required time. This is usually done using the SAP Tnx: VL01n. Freight Units are created as soon as the delivery is saved and they can be displayed in the document flow as shown in the figure below:
  

• Freight Units planned on a Freight Order: Using the Transportation Cockpit Fiori App, the Freight Unit is planned on a Freight Order. During this process the carrier, transportation vehicle and other important information is also assigned to the Freight Order.
  

• Carbon Emissions Calculation & Display in Freight Order: Based on the master data and planning data setup in SAP Transportation Management in S/4HANA, your SAP TM system is able to utilize the distance between two locations of a route and calculate Co2 emissions. As shown in the figure below, the system is able to use the Distance Weight based calculation and derive the planned Carbon Emissions which are easily displayable use the "Display Freight Order" Fiori App in "Blue" bar chart.
  

• Update Carbon Emissions in Freight Order: It is often a case, that the straight line distance between two locations is not the distance which is travelled by a truck to reach its destination. There can also be a case where mid-way the truck switched from diesel to bio-fuel or is stuck in traffic, in such cases the customers can edit update and report CO2 emissions per stage manually in SAP TM on S/4HANA which is displayed in "Orange" bar chart. This then paves the way for comparative embedded analytics analysis of carbon emission in S/4HANA.
